WikiLeaks Foto Deception

WikiLeak Claims this similar looking vehicle was the one in the “Collateral Murder” video.

But here is the actual black coloured van after shooting had ceased; the front was never blown apart like in the photo they posted on their website.

How stupid does one have to be to be running around with militants in a war zone carrying a camera. It seems clear to me these Rueters reporters were flirting with death in order to get a story and a few pictures. It’s sad they lost, but it’s the risk they took, and who even knows which side of the conflict they were rooting for.

Interesting writeup with the quotes about the use of photography as a scouting tool and previsualizing technique for an RPG carrier. It does seem like the photographers may have been collaborating. Willingly or unwittingly, we may never know.

I can see the whole situation appeared threatening, though via the Wikileaks video the engagement of the van trying to pick up the wounded seemed unwarranted. Given the context of the prior firefights, it is still not “right”, but not so surprising that they were on edge about the vehicle. Their decision to fire on it instead of intercepting it on the ground seemed a bit overcautious perhaps.

As for this last comparison of photos; I can actually see that the vehicles are likely the same… Just because you see the vehicle as black from the Apache footage does not mean it is. A B&W sensor may be more or less sensitive to different parts of the visible spectrum. I don’t know if this is a feature or a shortcoming of their gunner cam technology, but it simply looks like blues read dark on their camera. Conversely, reds will read brighter, which makes sense if they are trying to spot people. http://www.zoner.com/ww-en/support/tutorials/black-white-pictures/ – you can see from tutorials on the problems of converting colour to black and white that this is not an uncommon issue.

Perhaps a more technical reason for the van appearing so dark is that polarizing filters are logically used on the gun cameras, because this cuts down on reflections and glare. This tends to deepen the colour of the sky and would render the reflective upper part of the van much darker.

The position matches up if you look at the black fence and the concrete wall to the left side of it, with the particular little “step” of a row of unfinished bricks, which appears clearly in the Apache cam image. The damage to the vehicle could have happened anytime between the video and when then photo was taken, and perhaps it is from a Bradley or something backing into it or driving over the front end.

There is no evidence that it was “blown apart” nor that there was an engine fire afterward, but conceivably a tank tread would have the height to crush down on the front end. The weight of the tank would probably be more than sufficient to lift the whole van’s back end into the air, and when the tank passed, it settled back down. This would explain why the flat portion at the very front is elevated in the air. Not that this changes anything, just wanted to point it out that the damage is not proof that this is not an accurate photo of the vehicle involved as claimed.

The whole incident is regrettable, but at least it’s our right and freedom (at least in our countries) to discuss and question what we see.

The edited version still carries enough audio do demonstrate the lack of respect the two pilots had for the lives of clearly un-armed civilians and to defend them is the most blinkered form of jingoistic journalism. Their releasing the video was necessary and defending their actions while they were safely sat at a great distance, their lives under no threat is irresponsible journalism. As a Brit I would have expected you to have a greater sense of fair play. To introduce the further elements does provide a fuller picture it certainly does not excuse the murders those men committed and their clear redneck, rebel yell glee at the termination of human lives while sat at a cowards distance and it does you no credit to try and put Shane Warnesque spin on such a disgusting episode.

Those two vans are one and the same. A Bradley ran over the front end of the van when it showed up. That doesn’t change anything really but I thought you should know.
